A dual purpose diesel glow plug puller kit complete with attachments to grip the centre electrode and allow the glow plug to be withdrawn. An internal puller is also included to withdraw the lower body of the glow plug when it has sheared off just under the hex flush with the cylinder head. In this case the threaded portion of the glow plug body must be drilled out before withdrawing the remainder of the glow plug body.
Designed for extracting failed glow plugs
Universal use
Time saver
Contents:
A. External grip (7.7mm internal Ø) Includes size 4 (6.0 mm) contraction collet
B. External grip (6.8mm internal Ø) Includes size 3 (5.0 mm) contraction collet
C. Contraction collet: size 3 (5.0 mm)
D. Contraction collet: size 2 (3.6 mm)
E. Contraction collet: size 1 (2.7 mm)
F. T-bar slide hammer / puller
G. Internal (expansion collet) puller
Instruction:
1. Remove the electrical connector and then unscrew the glow plug from the cylinder head. Once the threaded area of the glow plug body is clear of the cylinder head the appropriate size external grip (A or B) can be used to withdraw the glow plug.
2. Choose the correct size contraction collet to fit snugly over the centre electrode of the glow plug. Slide the contraction collet into the appropriate external grip.
3. Screw the contraction collet / external grip assembly onto the slide hammer / puller (F) and place onto the centre electrode of the glow plug.
4. Tighten central shaft of slide hammer / puller down onto the external grip (note: left-hand thread) using hand pressure.
5. Use slide hammer to steadily withdraw the glow plug, the T-bar can be used to give more grip onto the centre electrode if necessary. If the glow plug hex has sheared off leaving the body of the glow plug in the cylinder head:
6. Follow the instructions above to remove the centre electrode. This will also let the broken hex be removed.
7. Carefully drill out the threaded portion of the glow plug body. Take care to keep the drill straight so that the threads in the cylinder head are not damaged. Drill the threaded portion only to the core size of the thread (and not beyond). Then unpick the threads remaining and remove them. To ensure that you do not drill too deep, measure the depth of drilling required against the new glow plug.
8. Carefully clean up any metal swarf and pick out any remaining material from the threads in the cylinder head.
9. Screw the internal expansion collet puller (G) onto the slide hammer / puller (F) and place down into the glow plug aperture.
10. Tighten the central shaft of the slide hammer / puller to expand the collet and grip the remaining glow plug body.
11. Use the slide hammer to steadily withdraw the glow plug body.
